Abbas says town bordering Jerusalem offered as capital of Palestinian state, rejects Trump plan

“That’s what they are offering us now. Abu Dis,” Abbas told the Palestinian Central Council on Sunday, calling it “the slap of the era.”

In a speech to the Palestinian Central Council on Sunday, Palestinian Authority (PA) President Mahmoud Abbas lamented that Abu Dis, a village bordering Jerusalem, is being suggested as the capital of a future Palestinian state, The Jerusalem Post reported.

“What would you want, if Jerusalem were to be lost? Would you want to make a state with Abu Dis as its capital?” Abbas stated rhetorically. “That’s what they are offering us now. Abu Dis.”

The PA president did not specify who exactly had offered Abu Dis, although recent reports quoting Palestinian and Lebanese officials have said that a forthcoming US peace plan includes Abu Dis as the capital of a future Palestinian state, according to the Post.

Speaking about the future US peace plan, Abbas said he has already said ‘no’ to American President Donald Trump.

‘May your house be destroyed’

“We can say no to anyone….And we have now said ‘no’ to Trump and others. No, we will not accept his plan,” Abbas said, the Post continued. “We told him that the deal of the era is the slap of the era…We will repel it.”

“We won’t take order from anyone,” the PA head continued, Arutz-7 reported.

Cursing Trump in Arabic, he stated, “May your house be destroyed.”

The US leader has stated on several occasions that achieving peace between Israel and the Palestinians would be “the ultimate deal.”

Trump’s plan to move the US Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem “crosses a red line,” Abbas said.

The Palestinians’ head negotiator, Saeb Erekat, told Voice of Palestine radio station last week that any peace talks sponsored by the US would be rejected until the Americans revoke their December 6 recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.
