After deadly bombing, Israeli opposition leaders call to end Gaza war

After five IDF soldiers killed and 14 injured in roadside bombing in northern Gaza Strip, Opposition Leader Yair Lapid calls for Israel to end the war in Gaza.

Israeli opposition leaders called Tuesday for an end to the war in Gaza, following a deadly bombing attack on IDF forces in the northern Gaza Strip.

Five IDF soldiers were killed and 14 injured in a roadside terrorist bombing attack in Beit Hanoun late Monday night, the Israeli military confirmed on Tuesday.

Following the IDF’s statement on the attack, Opposition Leader MK Yair Lapid called on the government to end the ongoing war against Hamas in Gaza.

“For the sake of the soldiers, for the sake of their families, for the sake of the hostages, for the sake of the State of Israel: This war must come to an end,” Lapid tweeted.

While Lapid backed Israeli operations against Hamas for much of the war following the October 7th, 2023 invasion, beginning in late June of this year the tone of his comments regarding the conflict have shifted.

On June 30th, Lapid declared there was “no benefit” to continuing the war, four days after claiming Israel’s operation in Gaza had reached a “dead end.”

Yair Golan, chairman of the left-wing The Democrats party and a former IDF chief of staff, also took to X on Tuesday to call for an end to the war.

Israel, he wrote, “must urgently implement a comprehensive hostage deal, bring our brothers home, and end the war.”

Golan, who sparked criticism recently when he accused Israeli soldiers of killing Gazan children “as a hobby,” accused senior Israeli government ministers of dancing on the “blood” of the IDF soldiers killed in Monday’s bombing.

“Smotrich and Ben-Gvir heard about the death of five fighters and immediately jumped to dance on their blood,” Golan tweeted.

“Just more and more death, more blood, more war for the sake of clinging to power and messianic delusions. They are not Zionists. Nor are they Jews. End the war. Bring back all the hostages. Save Israel.”

National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir fired back, calling Golan a “sicko,” and referencing his recent comments accusing IDF soldiers of gunning down Gaza children “as a hobby.”

“Yair ‘a sane country doesn’t kill babies as a hobby’ Golan — is calling me ‘someone who dances on [others’] blood’? Shame on you, sicko. The blood of our fallen soldiers, may God avenge them, whom you slandered, hasn’t even cooled yet.”
