Beirut demands Ukrainian embassy hand over suspected Mossad agent who reportedly escaped Hezbollah stronghold after IDF airstrike.

The Lebanese government is demanding the Ukrainian embassy in Beirut hand over a man suspected of spying on behalf of Israel’s Mossad, AFP reported Monday.
Citing a senior Lebanese security official and a source inside the Hezbollah terror organization, the report said that a man with Syrian and Ukrainian citizenship, who also holds a Palestinian Authority identification card, was detained by Hezbollah last September.
The man has been accused of serving as a Mossad operative and was detained after he parked his motorbike on a road south of Beirut leading to the airport.
The road where the man was captured runs through a Hezbollah stronghold centered around the Beirut suburb of Dahiyeh.
The Hezbollah source claimed that the motorbike was “planted with an explosive device disguised as a battery.”
Hezbollah detained the man from September until early March, when he managed to escape.
According to the report, the alleged spy was able to escape on March 6, thanks in part to an IDF airstrike on a Hezbollah building adjacent to the location where he was being held.
The man then fled to the Ukrainian embassy in Beirut.
The Lebanese General Security agency has claimed that it arrested five other men linked to the alleged Mossad cell, which included the dual Syrian-Ukrainian citizen.
The chief of General Security, Hassan Choukeir, told AFP that the Ukrainian embassy had asked that the man be permitted to leave the country.
“After checking his name and photograph, we became aware that he is wanted by the Lebanese judiciary and is the subject of a number of search and investigation notices from Lebanese security agencies,” he said.
Choukeir said the man was wanted for “planning assassinations and bombings in Beirut’s southern suburbs.”
