Argentina’s President Javier Milei to light Israel’s Independence Day torch

Israeli Knesset minister Miri Regev described the decision as a reflection of Milei’s “extraordinary friendship” toward the Jewish state.

In a historic and symbolic gesture, Argentina’s President Javier Milei has been chosen to light a torch at Israel’s official Independence Day ceremony, due to the deepening ties between the two nations.

The annual torch lighting ceremony on Har Herzl is one of Israel’s most iconic annual national events, traditionally reserved for individuals who have made exceptional contributions to the Jewish state and society.

Inviting a foreign leader, particularly a sitting president, to participate is a rare and meaningful move.

Milei, who has emerged in recent years as one of Israel’s most vocal and unwavering supporters, has repeatedly expressed strong backing for Israel throughout the ongoing war.

He has also taken concrete steps to strengthen the relations between the two countries, including promising to move Argentina’s embassy to Jerusalem.

Israeli Knesset minister Miri Regev described the decision as a reflection of Milei’s “extraordinary friendship” toward the Jewish state, especially during a time when Israel has faced intense international pressure and criticism.

This pick has been widely praised by Israeli leaders, who see Milei as a moral ally standing firmly with Israel through thick and thin.

The upcoming ceremony, like others in recent years, carries strong emotions, as Israel marks Independence Day, once again in the shadow of war and uncertainty.
