Assailant fires 20 shots into Jewish home in Redlands, CA, shouts antisemitic slurs

The shooter made a drive past the house, discharged 20 rounds, and shouted ‘f*ck Jews’ before driving away.

A Jewish family in Redlands, California, narrowly escaped injury after an assailant fired roughly 20 shots into their home during an apparent antisemitic drive-by attack on Saturday night, authorities and advocacy groups said.

The house had been visibly decorated for Chanukah, with illuminated holiday signs and Jewish symbols displayed outside. According to doorbell camera footage reviewed by the family, the shooter shouted antisemitic slurs while opening fire from a vehicle parked nearby.

In a statement shared with the Jewish outlet Community News, the family described returning home from dinner and noticing a car stopped a few houses away.

The driver verbally harassed them as they entered their home, they said. Minutes later, the vehicle drove past again. “Three minutes later the shooter made a drive past the house, discharged 20 rounds, and shouted ‘f*ck Jews’ before driving away,” the statement said.

The family said no one was physically hurt but confirmed that the suspect had not been apprehended as of Sunday.

Jewish organizations described the incident as part of a wider surge in antisemitic violence across the United States. David Englin, senior director of the Anti-Defamation League’s Los Angeles office, called the shooting “another dangerous and despicable act of violence impacting the Jewish community in Southern California,” noting that it took place on Shabbat and during the Chanukah holiday.

ADL Chief Executive Jonathan Greenblatt said the attack struck at the heart of a central Jewish tradition. “On Chanukah, we are meant to publicly display the menorah – to publicize the miracle (pirsumei nisa) and share the light – symbolizing Jewish survival and resilience,” he said. He added that Jewish law permits discretion when public expression becomes unsafe, but warned that such conditions should not exist in the United States.

“2025 in America should not be one of those times,” Greenblatt said. “Threats to the Jewish community’s safety must not be tolerated or normalized. Enough is enough.”

The Redlands attack comes amid repeated warnings from Jewish leaders that visible expressions of Jewish identity are increasingly being met with hostility, raising concerns about public safety during religious observances and daily life alike.
