At least 2 Israelis killed in Ethiopian Airlines crash

Israeli consulates in Addis Ababa and Nairobi are checking for Israeli victims following the crash of a new Boeing 737-8 MAX plane.

An Ethiopian Airlines flight on Sunday crashed shortly after takeoff from Addis Ababa on its way to Nairobi, Kenya.

All 157 people on board – 149 passengers and eight crew members – are feared to have died in the crash.

Israel fears that at least two of its citizens were onboard.

The foreign ministry said that Israeli consulates in Addis Ababa and Nairobi are checking whether Israelis were on the flight and that a situation room was opened in Jerusalem.

“I would like to send condolences to the government and people of Ethiopia and to the families of the victims who perished in the plane crash. Via the Foreign Ministry we are now checking if any Israelis were on this flight,” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated at the Sunday morning cabinet meeting.

“If there is anything we can do, we are – of course – ready to do it. We have also said this to the Ethiopian government,” he said.
