B’nai B’rith joins call to prevent Paris Summit from leading to another UN resolution

B’nai B’rith referred to the upcoming Paris summit as a “one-sided farce and an impediment to peace,” while also echoing concerns of senior Israelis officials said that summit could set the stage for another UN Security Council resolution against Israel.

B’nai B’rith International, a Jewish human rights NGO active in UN forums, called for the cancellation of the upcoming international summit in Paris on January 15 that will focus on implementing a two-state solution between Israel and the Palestinian Authority (PA), referring to it as a “one-sided farce and an impediment to peace.”

“Gatherings like the Paris conference effectively negate Israel’s role in discussions about its own security,” the organization said in a statement. “This feeds the Palestinian strategy of hindering the peace process by hiding behind the international community and using the United Nations system to advance the Palestinians’ goal of demonizing and isolating Israel.”

CEO of B’nai B’rith International Daniel S. Mariaschin warned that the Paris summit could lead to another UN Security Council resolution against Israel.

“The Paris summit may set the stage for yet another one-sided U.N. Security Council resolution, which would continue to cloud the prospect of a negotiated peace,” said the organization’s CEO Daniel S. Mariaschin.

On December 23, the UN Security Council unanimously passed a resolution that condemned any Israeli presence in territories won by Israel from Jordan during the 1967 war. The Obama Administration elected not to abide by traditional US policy of vetoing one-sided resolutions against Israel and therefore abstained.

Shortly after the resolution passed, Israeli officials considered the possibility of there being at least one more one-sided UN Security Council resolution against Israel before Obama leaves the White House on January 20th.  Some are speculating that such a resolution would include the parameters of a two-state solution between Israel and the Palestinian Authority.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu acknowledged on Tuesday that there were “signs” that the UN Security Council would attempt to pass another resolution based upon conclusions made at the Paris summit. He committed to making efforts to prevent such an outcome.
