Naveed Akram, one of the two terrorists responsible for the Bondi Beach massacre in Sydney, was charged with 59 offenses on Wednesday, including murder and terror charges.
On Wednesday, prosecutors filed an indictment against Akram after he regained consciousness, following a three-day coma stemming from wounds he suffered during a gun battle with police on Sunday.
The indictment includes 15 counts of murder and 40 counts of causing harm with intent to murder, along with terror-related offenses and other charges.
The charges stemmed not only from the deadly shooting attack, but also reflected plans by Akram and his father to use bombs which were later found in their car.
In the charge sheet, prosecutors wrote that it appeared Akram and his father carried out the mass shooting as an act of Islamist terrorism.
“Police will allege in court the man engaged in conduct that caused death, serious injury and endangered life to advance a religious cause and cause fear in the community,” the indictment read.
“Early indications point to a terrorist attack inspired by ISIS, a listed terrorist organization in Australia.”
A court hearing was held, with Akram appearing by video from his hospital bed.
Akram’s attorney, who was present with him in the hospital room, did not request that Akram be released on bail and did not enter a plea.
Following the 10-minute rampage on Sunday, both Akram and his father, Sajid Akram, were wounded by police.
While Sajid eventually succumbed to his wounds, his son survived in critical condition, but remained comatose until Wednesday.
Fifteen people were murdered during the attack, which targeted a Chanukah celebration organized by the local branch of the Chabad movement.
Roughly 30 people were wounded, with more than 20 of them still being treated in hospitals as of Wednesday.
