Brandenburg, Germany, antisemitism commissioner’s home targeted in suspected arson attack

A suspected arson attack targeted property belonging to Brandenburg’s antisemitism commissioner early Sunday, prompting a police investigation and condemnation from state leaders.

The fire broke out at approximately 3:40 a.m. local time at a shed on the commissioner’s property in the town of Templin, about 70 kilometers north of Berlin, according to authorities.

Firefighters were dispatched quickly and extinguished the blaze before it spread. No injuries were reported.

The property belongs to Andreas Büttner, who said his family was at home when the fire started.

In a statement posted on X, Büttner thanked local police and emergency responders, noting that while no one was hurt, the incident had a significant emotional impact.

“We are physically not injured, but are shaken by a serious attack,” Büttner wrote. He said he believes the fire was deliberately aimed at him, his family, and his home. “It is the expression of hate and intimidation,” he added, saying the attack would not deter him from his work. “Such actions will not lead to me being quieter or to me questioning my approach — they only give me strength in what I do.”

Police said they found an “anti-constitutional symbol” painted near the damaged shed. Security sources cited in reports said a red triangle was discovered on the front door of the main house, a symbol that has been associated with Hamas imagery in its publications.

The arson attempt followed an earlier incident involving Büttner. In August 2024, his car was vandalized with swastikas, an act that also drew condemnation at the time.

Brandenburg’s premier, Dietmar Woidke, denounced the attack, calling it an unacceptable act of extremism. “Extremism in any form has no place” in the state, he said, adding: “Violence against people or property is and remains absolutely unacceptable.” Woidke expressed hope that those responsible would be identified and brought to justice as the investigation continues.
