Brazil accuses Israel of genocide in Gaza, joining South African petition to ICJ

Brazil signs on to South Africa’s case before the International Court of Justice, accusing Israel of committing genocide in the Gaza Strip during the ongoing war against Hamas.

The Brazilian government has formally accused Israel of committed genocide in the Gaza Strip during the ongoing war against the Hamas terror organization, and has signed on to South Africa’s case against Israel in the International Court of Justice in The Hague.

Brazil’s Foreign Ministry issued a statement Wednesday announcing Brasilia’s move to join the South African ICJ petition.

“The Brazilian government announces that it is in the final stages of submitting a formal intervention in the ongoing case at the International Court of Justice, brought by South Africa under the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide.”

Brazil went on to condemn not only Israel’s war on Hamas in Gaza, but also alleged “recurring episodes of violence” against Arab civilians in Judea and Samaria.

“The Brazilian government expresses deep indignation at the recurring episodes of violence against the civilian population in the State of Palestine, not limited to the Gaza Strip but extending to the West Bank.”

“The international community cannot remain inactive in the face of ongoing atrocities. Brazil believes there is no longer room for moral ambiguity or political omission. Impunity undermines international legality and undermines the credibility of the multilateral system.”

Under President Luiz Lula da Silva, widely referred to merely as “Lula,” Brazil has adopted increasingly hostile positions vis-à-vis Israel since Lula’s pro-Israel, conservative predecessor, Jair Bolsonaro, was narrowly voted out of office in 2022.

South Africa’s ICJ case against Israel, first opened in December 2023, centers around accusations regarding actions by the IDF in the opening stages of the war against Hamas after the invasion of October 7^th, 2023, as well as statements by Israeli leaders in the wake of the Gaza invasion.

Israel rejected the allegations and condemned the court for taking up the matter, accusing the United Nation’s judiciary arm of politicizing the case and ignoring Israeli efforts to minimize civilian casualties in Gaza.

The United States, Britain, Germany, Austria, France, Hungary, Guatemala, Italy, Paraguay, and the Czech Republic have also expressed their opposition to the case.
