Canada pledges $10M to PA statehood at UN ‘two-state solution’ conference

However, Canada did not follow France’s lead in recognizing Palestinian statehood immediately.

Canada has committed $40 million in total funding to Gaza and the Palestinian Authority during a “Two State Solution” UN conference this week that the Trump administration has slammed as “a slap in the face to the victims of the Oct. 7th Hamas massacre.”

Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand announced Monday that Ottawa would provide $30 million in humanitarian aid for Gaza and an additional $10 million to help the Palestinian Authority prepare for eventual statehood.

“The Palestinian question is at the heart of any hope for long-term stability in the Middle East,” Anand told the UN conference in New York.

“We condemn the inhumane killing of civilians, including children. We condemn the ongoing expansion of settlements and settler violence in the West Bank, and we condemn the forced displacement of the Palestinian population.”

“A workable Palestinian state needs legitimate, democratic governance that serves all Palestinian people.”

However, Canada did not follow France’s lead in recognizing Palestinian statehood immediately.

French President Emmanuel Macron’s announcement shocked the world on Saturday when he announced that Paris would formally recognize a Palestinian state next month, making France the first G7 country to take such a step.

U.S. State Department spokeswoman Tammy Bruce delivered a blistering critique of the three-day conference, calling it a “publicity stunt that could compromise talks for a ceasefire in Gaza.”

Earlier Monday, Prime Minister Mark Carney said Canada would work with international partners on recognizing a future Palestinian state “that does not include Hamas in any role.”

Speaking in Prince Edward Island, he also accused Israel and its settlers of a “lack of respect” for “the territorial integrity of Palestine in the West Bank.”

Canada changed its Palestinian statehood policy last November under the previous Trudeau government, saying Ottawa could offer recognition before peace talks conclude rather than requiring a successful peace agreement with Israel first.
