Canada remains mistrustful of the Iranian regime and will not remove sanctions until reassured that Tehran will lose the ability to develop nuclear weapons.
Despite US President Barack Obama’s optimism regarding the framework nuclear agreement made last week between the P5+1 and Iran, the Canadian government is not convinced that the deal would prevent Tehran from developing a nuclear weapon.
Canadian Foreign Minister Rob Nicholson responded negatively to the deal, warning that such a development could spark a nuclear arms race in the Middle East.
“We have to make every possible diplomatic effort to ensure that Iran will never be able to achieve the ability to develop a nuclear weapon,” Arutz 7 quotes Canadian Foreign Minister Rob Nicholson as saying.
“Iran’s track record is not one that encourages trust,” he declared, adding that Canada will continue to judge Iran based on its actions rather than its words.
Nicholson announced that Canada will allocate $3 million for the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to oversee the implementation of the nuclear deal.
James Bezan, parliamentary secretary to Defense Minister Jason Kenney, told CBC News that Canada would consider removing sanctions on Iran only if assured that it “finally and honestly” neutralizes the military aspects of its nuclear program.
“Until then, we are going to be very conscientious and skeptical of the outcome here,” Bezan stated.
