China called on the US and Israel over the weekend to halt their air campaigns against Iran, warning that the conflict in the Middle East could spark a larger global conflagration.
On Sunday, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi spoke with reporters at a press conference in Beijing, during which he lamented the conflict with Iran, issuing a thinly veiled criticism of the US and Israel.
“This was a war that should never have happened, and a war that benefited no one,” Yi said, denouncing “unilateral acts,” which he described as “power politics and bullying.”
Beijing’s top diplomat called on the US, Israel, and Iran to halt the fighting and to engage in talks “as soon as possible.”
“All parties should return to the negotiating table as soon as possible and resolve their differences through equal dialogue.
“As the world’s most important force for peace, for stability and for justice, we have full confidence in the future of humanity,” Wang continued, offering China’s services as a mediator in Mideast peace talks.
“We stand ready to work with all like-minded countries to pursue the noble goal of building a community with a shared future for humanity, and write new chapters of peace, development and win-win cooperation for our times.”
Wang added that without an immediate deescalation, the Middle East conflict could quickly spread across the globe.
An immediate ceasefire, he said, is necessary to “prevent the situation from escalating and avoid the spillover and spread of the flames of war.”
“What is needed now is for both sides to make thorough preparations, foster a conducive environment, manage existing differences, and eliminate unnecessary interference.”
