‘Dark and vindictive’: Mamdani uses ‘America 250’ to blast America, attack capitalism

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani delivered a speech commemorating the United States’ 250th anniversary on Friday in which he sharply criticized capitalism, corporate power and foreign military involvement, framing those issues as challenges to the country’s founding principles.

The address, delivered from George Washington’s desk before a group of newly naturalized American citizens, centered on Mamdani’s argument that the United States is failing its ideals.

“We see a city of contradictions within a nation of contradictions,” he said. “We see the wealthiest nation in the history of the world — one where children go to sleep hungry while the world’s first trillionaire hungers for more. We see monopolies that dominate every industry and oligarchs who buy elections.”

He argued that the nation’s promise has been advanced by generations of Americans whose contributions have often gone unrecognized, including enslaved people, Revolutionary War soldiers and immigrants. At the same time, he maintained that the country’s founding values remain resilient, saying they are “strong enough to endure any authoritarian regime.”

Without mentioning President Donald Trump by name, Mamdani criticized federal immigration enforcement.

“We see masked agents terrorizing our streets, eating food cooked by our undocumented neighbors before spiriting them away in unmarked vans,” he said. He also described a nation whose prosperity was built by workers “with calloused, dirt-streaked hands,” while much of that wealth was concentrated “in the soft hands of a precious few.”

The mayor expanded his criticism to the healthcare system, housing and federal spending.

“I see America in a health insurance industry that exploits the sick, but that is not all I see when I look for America,” he said. He later added, “I see America when we spend our tax dollars on bombs and bailouts, when we sell our elections to the highest bidder.”

Mamdani concluded by recalling his family’s move from Uganda, saying the Statue of Liberty represented “the promise of America—the promise of the beautiful, patriotic work of rendering America, year after year, a little more faithful to its founding ideals.”
