Drone-smuggling ring uncovered in southern Israel: four arrested

Investigators determined that the suspects monitored IDF radio communications during the smuggling operations.

Israel’s Shin Bet, Israel Police, and the Israel Defense Forces announced Thursday that they have uncovered a weapons-smuggling network operating in the Negev, using drones to transport arms from the Sinai border into Israel.

According to the joint statement, four Israeli citizens, residents of Masoudin al-Azazmeh in the Negev, were arrested about a month ago and questioned in a coordinated Shin Bet and police investigation.

The investigation found that members of the network were involved in significant weapons-smuggling operations from the Sinai into Israel using drones. In one smuggling attempt, four MAG machine guns were transported by drone before the aircraft was intercepted and brought down by IDF forces.

Investigators also determined that the suspects monitored IDF radio communications during the smuggling operations and were linked to additional weapons transfers along the Sinai border.

The arrests come amid a broader surge in drone-based weapons smuggling along Israel’s borders. Earlier this week, IDF forces thwarted an overnight attempt to smuggle weapons into Israel along the country’s western border after the Air Control Array detected a drone crossing into Israeli territory.

According to the IDF, forces from the Paran Brigade intercepted the drone, which was found carrying 20 M16 rifles, along with additional weapons components including barrels and stocks. The seized weapons were transferred to security forces for further processing.

In recent days, the IDF has also intercepted two additional drones in the same general area, reflecting what the military describes as increasingly sophisticated smuggling methods. In a separate incident last week, IDF observers intercepted a drone that crossed into Israeli airspace from Jordan, recovering 40 firearms.

Israeli security forces continue operating across multiple sectors to detect and disrupt weapons-smuggling attempts, with preventing the entry of illegal arms remaining a central element of Israel’s border defense and internal security efforts.
