Egyptian president: ‘I believe in Trump’s ability to solve Middle East conflict’

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sissi said on Wednesday that he believes in Trump’s “abilities to resolve the conflict” between Israel and the Palestinians. 

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sissi expressed hope and optimism in President Donald Trump’s ability to bring peace in the Middle East, while speaking to Egyptian media outlets on Wednesday.

“I believe in him and his abilities to resolve conflict,” al-Sissi said.

“Trump is a great man who is not satisfied with anything but success, and we have confidence in his abilities and his promises.”

The Egyptian president made his remarks in response to a question asking him if he believed that there was “hope for a solution to the Palestinian issue under Trump.” Al-Sissi answered unequivocally in the affirmative saying, “if (the opportunity) would be taken, we could reach a solution and the conflict will become history.”

Sissi implied that it was Israel who needed to make the jump.

“The Arabs and Palestinians are ready for peace,” he continued. “You (Israel) have an opportunity to reach peace. There is an opportunity for all of us to live together and achieve a better future for our people without hatred.”

“It is a mistake to miss this opportunity as we enter the Arab-Islamic-American Summit,” he added.

The Arab-Islamic-American summit referenced by Sissi will take place from May 20 to May 21. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia will be welcoming Islamic leaders from around the world and US President Donald Trump, who will be on his first visit abroad as president. The summit will explore ways to “confront violent extremist ideology,” as well as “renew our mutual commitment to global security and further strengthen already deep business, cultural and political ties,” according to Asharq Al-Awsat.
