At a town hall meeting at Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa on Sunday, Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren, a leading Democratic presidential candidate, was asked if she would make U.S. aid to the Jewish state conditional on Israel’s halting construction in Judea and Samaria.
“Right now, [Prime Minister Benjamin] Netanyahu says that he is going to take Israel in a direction of increasing settlements. That does not move us toward a two-state solution. It is the official policy of the United States of America to support a two-state solution. And if Israel is moving in the opposite direction, everything’s on the table,” she said.
Meanwhile, it is uncertain who will be Israel’s prime minister following the 2020 American election. On Monday evening Netanyahu returned the mandate to form a coalition to President Reuven Rivlin after failing to gather sufficient backing.
Polls have found support for Israel to be weaker among “progressive” Democrats than among other Americans, with a number of Democratic members of the House of Representatives openly supporting the anti-Israel BDS (Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions) movement.
