Eric Swalwell has announced his resignation from Congress, marking a dramatic fall for the longtime California Democrat and Governor hopeful, due to a rapidly escalating misconduct scandal.
Swalwell’s decision came after multiple women accused him of misconduct, including serious allegations that triggered both a federal ethics investigation and a separate criminal probe.
The controversy quickly spiraled, with members of both parties calling for his resignation and even pushing for his expulsion from Congress if he refused to step down.
The House Ethics Committee formally opened an investigation into the allegations, further intensifying pressure on Swalwell and dwindling support within his own party.
In addition to the congressional fallout, Swalwell had already suspended his campaign for governor of California just two days ago, as the scandal deepened and key allies distanced themselves.
Despite denying the allegations and calling them false, Swalwell acknowledged “mistakes in judgment” and apologized to his family and friends but ultimately chose to resign as the political and legal pressure became overwhelming.
His resignation will trigger a special election to fill his seat, adding even more uncertainty to an already turbulent political landscape.
Later in the day, another congressional resignation came from Tony Gonzales (R-Texas), also due to misconduct allegations alleged against him.
