Family of Jewish FBI agent sues Iran for his disappearance

The family of a Jewish former FBI agent whose whereabouts remain unknown since 2007, is suing the Iranian government for its apparent role in his disappearance.

The family of Robert Levinson, a Jewish former FBI agent and consultant with the CIA who visited Iran’s Kish Island 10 years ago, reportedly for a covert intelligence operation, is suing the regime in Tehran for its purported role in his continuous and mysterious absence.

The lawsuit, filed in a federal court in Washington, DC, seeks remedies from Iran for inflicting emotional distress on Levinson’s wife and seven children. The Islamic Republic denies having any role in his disappearance since 2007.

A lawyer representing Levinson’s family called such claims hollow, adding that Iran had long been engaged in a campaign of disinformation about the missing man.

“We want justice, and this case calls out for justice,” attorney David L. McGee said in an interview, according to the New York Times. “We also want the world to know about Iran’s cruel and cynical behavior.”

Although his whereabouts have been a mystery, Levinson appeared in a hostage videotape made in 2010. According to the lawsuit, the FBI believes the video was an “Iranian attempt to create a false scenario that Robert Levinson was being held by some other country.”

Some experts have speculated that Levinson has already passed away in captivity, but his family is not giving up.
