Fatal Paris shooting ‘looks like another terrorist attack,’ ISIS claims responsibility

“It looks like another terrorist attack,” Trump said following a shooting in Paris that deliberately targeted police guarding the downtown area. ISIS has claimed responsibility.

One police officer was killed and another wounded in a shooting attack Thursday evening in central Paris.

Reuters reported that ISIS has claimed responsibility for the shooting attack, citing the Amaq news agency affiliated with the terror group.

The news agency identified the attacker as one of its “soldiers” naming him as Abu Yousif, the Belgian.

The victims were guarding the metro station near the famous Champs-Elysees. The assailant “deliberately targeted” police officers, the French Interior Ministry stated.

Police returned fire and eliminated the attacker. The entire area has been closed off.

‘It looks like another terrorist attack,” US President Trump said. He expressed condolences to the people of France during a press conference with Italian Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni.

“We have to be strong and we have to be vigilant, and I’ve been saying it for a long time,” he added.

French President Francois Hollande held an emergency meeting, after which he “says he is convinced the circumstances of the Paris shooting points to terrorist act,” the Associated Press tweeted.

It is still unclear whether the assailant had accomplices. Police are investigating the situation and have not yet confirmed that it was a terror attack.

The shooting took place just a few days before the French national elections, in which the threat of terrorism is expected to play a factor in the results.

Authorities announced several arrests on Tuesday in what they said was a thwarted terror attack.

This is a developing story.
