FBI director warns Congress of risk of Hamas attack on US soil

Law enforcement announced it has launched, ‘multiple investigations into individuals affiliated’ terror organizations.

FBI director Christopher Wray testified before the House Homeland Security on Wednesday about the risk of terrorist attacks on Americans, given recent events.

Wray stated that terrorist threats against Americans have reached  “another level” since the attacks of October 7th and the beginning of the Israel-Hamas war.

“Given calls for action [by terrorist groups], our most immediate concern is that individuals or small groups will draw twisted inspiration from the events in the Middle East to carry out attacks here at home.”

These “calls to action” according to Wray, have been given by Hamas, al-Qaeda, and ISIS, and the intelligence community is on the lookout for lone-wolf potential terrorists who are being inspired to take violent action.

Traditionally, the purview of FBI investigations has been in targeting the funding of terrorist organizations. However, the issue goes beyond contributions and can be translated into terrorist attacks on U.S. soil. Currently the FBI’s task, according to Wray, is to “asses how the threat is evolving.”

Although Wray admitted “it’s time to be concerned,” he emphasized, “Americans should continue to be alert and careful, but they shouldn’t stop going about their daily lives.”

Law enforcement has detained a number of individuals suspected of plotting terrorist acts. One of them was Sohaib Abuayyash, 20, a Jordanian national illegally residing in the United States on an expired nonimmigrant visa, who was learning to make bombs, stockpiling weapons, and referenced attacking people at Jewish events in Houston, according to a federal judge.

Abuayyash was arrested last month for unauthorized firearm possession after threatening to attack a Jewish gathering and praising “martyrdom.”
