Senate Democrat John Fetterman took aim at his own party, accusing fellow Democrats of betraying Israel and politicizing Middle East policy.
Appearing on Fox News’ “Hannity Wednesday night,” Fetterman defended his support for President Donald Trump’s policies vis-a-vis Israel and Iran while taking his own party to task over the growing criticism of Israel among Democratic lawmakers.
“I believe my party betrayed Israel through that Gaza war. I became, really, the last Democrat that is going to stand with Israel to the end,” Fetterman told Sean Hannity.
The 56-year-old Pennsylvania senator expressed shock at his party’s response to the Gaza ceasefire deal and slammed criticism of Trump’s decision in June to bomb three key Iranian nuclear sites.
“I think I was one of the first – the only – Democrat to celebrate the ceasefire and the peace deal that the President helped to achieve. That is an incredible development. That is not about the politics,” Fetterman said.
“I was the only Democrat that supported the [strikes on the] Iranian nuclear sites. How could we allow Iran to acquire nuclear bombs? Again, I am going to follow country over party through these things.”
Fetterman also praised Israel’s multi-front war against Iran and Iranian proxies, calling Israel’s accomplishments over the past two years “magnificent.”
“I think it is magnificent what Israel has been able to accomplish. They were able to break and destroy Hamas, Hezbollah, and the Houthis, and now they also broke and humiliated Iran and that blocked them from acquiring a nuclear bomb. That is huge and all the experts were wrong.”
A liberal Democrat who has nonetheless backed Trump’s Middle Eastern policy and voted to confirm some of his nominees, Fetterman vowed to continue to back pro-Israel measures in the Senate, even if it brings him into conflict with his party.
“I was proud to stand with Israel, and I absolutely agreed with the way the President has handled that situation through it. I am always going to vote for whatever supports Israel: military, financial, intelligence; whatever that is.”
