FIFA’s controversial gamble: Israel-Palestinian match planned despite growing hostility

FIFA is reportedly pushing ahead with plans for a symbolic match between Israeli and Palestinian under-15 teams during its global youth football festival in September, despite deep political tensions and repeated failures to foster cooperation.

The proposal comes just months after Palestinian Football Association chief Jibril Rajoub publicly refused to shake hands with an Israeli football official at the FIFA Congress, accusing Israel of “fascism and genocide” in a confrontation that overshadowed the event. Rajoub later defended the snub, arguing that shaking hands with his Israeli counterpart would amount to “whitewashing” what he described as Israel’s crimes.

Despite the diplomatic fallout, FIFA President Gianni Infantino is reportedly determined to make the match happen as a symbol of coexistence. But with hostility still running high and previous peace-through-sport efforts largely unsuccessful, the initiative is raising fresh questions about whether soccer can bridge a divide that politics has failed to close.
