Former supporters of Zohran Mamdani gathered outside his New York City mayoral residence Tuesday night following renewed attention to documents released as part of the Jeffrey Epstein case, which protesters claim reference Mamdani’s mother, acclaimed filmmaker Mira Nair.
The so-called “Epstein files” consist of court documents, depositions, and unsealed records connected to civil litigation involving the late financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and his network.
The documents have sparked widespread scrutiny of public figures mentioned within them, even in cases where no criminal allegations or wrongdoing have been established.
Mira Nair is an internationally known filmmaker, best recognized for directing films such as Monsoon Wedding, New York I Love You and The Namesake, and has long been active in elite cultural and philanthropic circles.
Online claims circulating in recent days allege that Nair had social or professional interactions with Epstein, though no criminal accusations against her have been substantiated, and inclusion in documents does not imply wrongdoing.
Video from the protest shows demonstrators accusing Mamdani of deception, with chants including: “We were with you. We voted for you. We advocated for you. You lied. Shame.”
Some protesters claimed they felt misled after supporting his campaign amid the resurfacing of Epstein-related materials.
As of this writing, neither Mamdani nor Nair has issued a public response addressing the protest or the claims. Law enforcement reported no arrests or injuries at the scene.
