Former Russian politician killed in Ukraine

The Kremlin denies Ukraine’s accusations of “state terrorism” for alleged involvement in the killing of a former Russian lawmaker.

Former Russian lawmaker Denis Voronenkov was shot and killed in Kiev, Ukraine on Thursday in what is being described by the Ukrainian president Petro Poroshenko as “an act of state terrorism on the part of Russia.”

Voronenkov’s bodyguard was also injured in the shoot-out with the perpetrator, who died of gunshot wounds.

Voronenkov is a key witness for Ukrainian authorities attempting to build a treason case against former Ukrainian president Viktor Yanukovich, ousted in a revolution in 2014, after four years in power. Yanukovich found refuge in Russia.

“Voronenkov was one of the main witnesses of Russian aggression against Ukraine and, in particular, the role of Yanukovich regarding the deployment of Russian troops to Ukraine,” said Poroshenko.

Poroshenko also claimed it was “no accident” Thursday’s murder occurred on the same day as a series of explosions at a base near Kharkiv in eastern Ukraine that stored ammunition for the Ukrainian military in their fight against Pro-Russian separatist militias in eastern Ukraine.

Russia denies Poroshenko’s accusations.

“We believe all falsehoods that can already be heard about much-hyped Russian involvement are absurd,” said Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov.
