French Jewish cemetery vandalized

A small Jewish cemetery in Waldwisse was vandalized last week.

A small, 18thcentury Jewish cemetery in Waldwisse, a village on the French-German border, was vandalized last week.

Some 40 of the 50 headstones were smashed or toppled. However, no anti-Semitic graffiti was found.

The Jewish community in the nearby town of Thionville filed a complaint. Police launched an investigation.

The Thionville mayor condemned the incident, saying there is no place in the town for intolerance and vandalism.

The same cemetery, which is no longer in use, was defaced in 2014. Youths accused of vandalism in that case received suspended sentences.

This incident is the latest in a string of Jewish cemetery desecrations around the globe, most recently in the US.
