Gaza deal destined to fail, says top Israeli minister – report

Israel’s outgoing Strategic Affairs minister reportedly says Israel is poised to make peace deals with Syria and Lebanon while warning that the Gaza deal will inevitably fail and the IDF will have to clear Hamas out of the Strip.

A senior Israeli minister has quietly warned his advisers that the Trump administration’s Gaza peace plan is ultimately destined to fail, predicting that the IDF will need to resume its operation in Gaza and retake areas returned to Hamas as part of the ceasefire, sources close to the minister say.

On Saturday night, Israel’s Channel 14 reported that officials in Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer’s inner circle said that the outgoing minister expressed optimism regarding the prospects for new deals expanding the Abraham Accords while at the same time lamenting that Israel will eventually be forced to resume its war in Gaza against Hamas.

Dermer, who is slated to resign from the government next month, reportedly told his aides last week that Israel will likely reach agreements with Syria and Lebanon, capitalizing on the IDF’s successful military campaign against the Hezbollah terrorist organization and the collapse of the Assad regime in Damascus.

However, Dermer also told officials within his ministry that the new security force being assembled by Egypt – which is expected to draw from countries across the Muslim world – will be unable to succeed in its mission of disarming Hamas, demilitarizing the Gaza Strip, and enforcing the Trump administration’s peace deal.

While the temporary pan-Muslim force provided for in the Trump plan – called the International Stabilization Force – is destined to fail, Dermer said, forcing Israel to resume the war in Gaza, he added that the refusal of Hamas to disarm and the failure of the ISF to enforce the peace plan would secure American backing for a comprehensive IDF operation to dismantle Hamas in Gaza.
