Hamas government ‘resigns’ in purely cosmetic move

The Hamas-run government in the Gaza Strip announced Monday that it has resigned and will transfer administrative authority to a national committee tasked with managing the territory, a move presented as a step toward establishing a technocratic government.

In a statement, the Hamas government said it had completed “all arrangements” to hand over the administration of Gaza to what it called the “National Committee for the Administration of Gaza,” also referred to as the technocrats’ committee.

Nikolay Mladenov, the international mediator leading negotiations on Gaza’s postwar roadmap, welcomed the announcement, saying it underscored “the importance of bringing the Roadmap discussions to a successful conclusion.”

In a post on X, Mladenov said the agreement would serve as “the bridge between declarations and implementation,” adding that once the remaining implementation issues are resolved, the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza (NCAG) could assume its responsibilities.”

Despite the announcement, the move is not expected to significantly alter the balance of power in Gaza. Hamas is expected to retain effective control of the territory, with members of the terrorist organization continuing to occupy key positions during the transition period.

The announcement came after mediators reportedly informed Hamas that, under understandings reached with Mladenov, discussions over Hamas’ disarmament and the group’s accumulated financial obligations would be suspended for the time being.

According to Palestinian sources cited by the Lebanese newspaper Al-Akhbar, a Hamas delegation is expected to return to Cairo later this week for direct talks with Mladenov aimed at formalizing the understandings reached so far.

An Israeli official, however, dismissed the move as purely cosmetic.

“The supposed resignation of the Hamas government, in which all its members remain in their positions, is a meaningless spin,” the official told Israel’s Kan News. “Hamas fears it will be declared in violation of the agreement, so it is stalling for time and engaging in public relations spin.”

The reported transition comes amid ongoing diplomatic efforts to shape Gaza’s postwar governance, though it is unlikely to result in any meaningful change to Hamas’ grip on the enclave.
