Swiss intelligence authorities announced they will open long-sealed files connected to Nazi war criminal Josef Mengele, raising new questions about whether the Auschwitz “Angel of Death” secretly operated in Switzerland after World War II.
Historians believe the files may reveal previously hidden details about Mengele’s possible movements in Europe after an international arrest warrant was issued against him in 1959, including suspicions he entered Switzerland under a false identity.
Mengele was one of the most notorious Nazi criminals, infamous for conducting horrific medical experiments on Auschwitz prisoners — especially twins and people with disabilities — in the name of Nazi racial ideology. He escaped justice for decades before dying in Brazil in 1979.
The secrecy surrounding the files fueled years of speculation, with researchers questioning whether Swiss authorities concealed information tied to foreign intelligence agencies, including the Mossad, and Nazi escape networks.
