Hillary Clinton offers rare praise for Trump’s role in Israel-Hamas ceasefire

Clinton acknowledged that Trump’s efforts to end the two-year war in Gaza “worked” but cautioned that given the volatility of the region, progress would likely remain “week to week.”

Nearly a decade after losing in the 2016 presidential election, Hillary Clinton offered unexpected praise for her former rival, crediting Donald Trump for advancing the Israel-Hamas ceasefire.

Speaking Thursday at Brown University’s Pizzitola Sports Center as part of the Stephen A. Ogden Jr. Memorial Lecture series, Clinton acknowledged that Trump’s efforts to end the two-year war in Gaza “worked” but cautioned that given the volatility of the region, progress would likely remain “week to week.”

But that’s where the former secretary of state’s guarded praise for the president of the United States ended. Turning to foreign policy, Clinton warned that Trump’s never-ending shifting policies have created “dangerous uncertainty” that leaves allies uneasy and adversaries emboldened.

“We are stronger in the United States when we are nurturing and preserving alliances,” she said, “but if we don’t know what our policies are from week to week, that gives a lot of room for maneuver by people who don’t wish us well.”

Clinton took aim at Trump’s closeness to Vladimir Putin by describing the Russian dictator as “impossible, dangerous, and misogynistic” and warned that “some leaders simply cannot be charmed.”

Reflecting on her devastating presidential campaign, Clinton once more blamed “disinformation” and lamented over an outdated social media strategy that cost her the race.

“The election is a big piece of this because without facts, evidence and truth, you can’t have trust, you can’t make decisions in any setting that are going to be rooted in reality, but certainly in elections,” she warned. “It’s very difficult to imagine having an election where voters are being asked to make decisions when there’s no basis in fact for what they’re being asked to choose between.”
