Honduras weighs Jerusalem embassy move during diplomatic visit

Reports in the Israeli media indicate that Honduras may be the next nation to move its embassy to the Jewish state’s capital.

A Honduran delegation arrived in Israel reportedly to investigate a potential embassy move to Jerusalem.

Following secret discussions with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the Honduran delegation is now weighing the move, with a number of factors playing into the decision, according to Times of Israel.

Among the demands reportedly floated by Honduras are Israel’s commitment to open an embassy in Honduras’ capital, Tegucigalpa, in addition to strengthening bilateral trade with the Central American nation, reported the Times.

While Foreign Ministry spokesman Emmanuel Nahshon commented on the Honduran delegation’s presence in Israel, he did not speak directly to the embassy move discussions.

Meanwhile, Tegucigalpa did not comment on the prospects of an embassy move either.

If Honduras proceeds with relocation of its embassy, in will join the US, which made the move last May after President Donald Trump officially recognized Jerusalem as Israel’s capital in December 2017.

Earlier this month, Australia recognized “West Jerusalem” as Israel’s capital, but declared it would not move its embassy until final status issues were fully negotiated with the Palestinians.
