French counterterrorism prosecutors are taking charge of an investigation into the shooting of a police officer in southern France and a hostage-taking incident at a supermarket in a neighboring town.
The Paris prosecutor’s office said counterterrorism investigators are taking over the probe into the ongoing hostage-taking incident Friday in the town of Trebes, but did not provide details. The assailant reportedly claimed connections to the Islamic State terror group.
The shooting incident took place in the town of Carcassonne, a 15-minute drive from Trebes, where a terrorist “entered the Super U supermarket at around 11: 15 a.m. and shots were heard,” a source told AFP. He reportedly yelled “Allahu Akbar” as he opened fire.
The latest reports indicate four people are dead, including the assailant, and about a dozen were wounded.
