In an historic and surprising outcome, Donald J. Trump won the 2016 US presidential elections and will become the 45th president of the United States of America in January.
In what appears to be a stunning victory, Donald Trump won at least 306 of the electoral votes, winning many states that analysts predicted would be conquered by Hillary Clinton.
Clinton called Trump to concede her loss and congratulate Trump on his victory.
Despite hopes by the Democrats to regain control of the House, the Republicans preserved their majority in both the Senate and Congress, giving Trump massive political clout. There has not been a Republican president and a Republican-controlled House simultaneously since the George W. Bush administration.
During his victory speech, Trump called for unity and vowed to work “for all Americans.”
“America will no longer settle for anything less than the best,” Trump pledged. “We must reclaim our country’s destiny and dream big and bold and daring.”
Clinton campaign manager John Podesta announced that she would not speak publicly about the results of the election until the morning.
