President Joe Biden is seriously considering dropping out of the 2024 presidential election, five sources have claimed, amid concerns within the Democratic Party over Biden’s electability following last week’s presidential debate against Donald Trump.
Biden repeatedly fumbled through sentences during Thursday’s CNN debate against Trump in Atlanta, the first between the two candidates in the 2024 election season.
Often appearing exhausted, the president struggled to express himself coherently in a gaffe-filled performance in which he boasted his administration had “beat Medicare,” and that the U.S. under his leadership was “the biggest producer of support for Israel than anyone in the world.”
A snap poll by CNN found that by a margin of two-to-one, most viewers believed Trump won the debate.
While senior Democrats, including congressional leaders, have publicly expressed confidence in Biden’s ability to win this year’s election and to continue to fulfill his duties as president, some Democratic lawmakers are privately concerned by the odds the party’s presumptive nominee faces in November.
In the House, Hakeem Jeffries, Jim Clyburn, and Nancy Pelosi have also expressed reservations, according to NBC News.
An aide to Congressman Clyburn, Brianna Frias, denied the claim, however, saying Clyburn “has total confidence in President Joe Biden and the Biden-Harris ticket.”
“Any reports alleging that the Congressman has expressed anything other than firm support of President Biden are completely untrue.”
The NBC News report also cited five difference people familiar with the president’s plans and reactions to the debate who claimed Biden himself may be wavering on whether to go through with his final presidential election.
According to the five sources, the president is set to discuss the possibility of dropping out with his family during a trip to Camp David on Sunday.
The president, First Lady Jill Biden, and the couple’s children and grandchildren are gathered at Camp David Saturday night.
One source cited in the report said Biden felt “humiliated” after hearing how his debate performance was received, and that he is “painfully aware” of the physical images of himself during the debate.
“It’s a mess,” the source said.
Another source cited in the report claimed that ultimately, First Lady Jill Biden’s opinion will be the deciding factor in whether the president will seek a second term.
“The decision-makers are two people — it’s the president and his wife,” the source said.
“Anyone who doesn’t understand how deeply personal and familial this decision will be isn’t knowledgeable about the situation.”
