IAF bombs Syrian target in response to stray fire

While Israel has managed to stay out of the Syrian civil war raging on its border, the Jewish state has vowed to retaliate against any and all fire crossing its territory, whether intentional or not.

Israel’s Air Force (IAF) attacked a Syrian military position used by the Syrian army in the Golan Heights on Monday in response to at least two incidents of stray mortar fire that landed inside Israeli territory.

The mortar fire landed in an open space, causing no injuries or damage.

The target attacked was the source from which the mortars were fired, the IDF said.

The IDF stated that it views the Syrian regime as responsible for all incidents emanating from its territory, “and will not tolerate any attempts to hinder Israel’s sovereignty or the well being of its citizens.”

In the past weeks there have been several incidents of fire spilling over from the Syrian civil war into Israeli territory.

Opposing factions in Syria’s civil war have been battling heavily in the Kuneitra area adjacent to Israel’s northern border.

While Israel has refrained from intervening in the Syrian conflict, the IDF has responded to stray fire from Syria with artillery shelling or an air strike against Syrian army or rebel positions, in most cases targeting the source of fire.
