IDF expanding patrols along Jordanian border, citing invasion risk

IDF officials warn of threats originating from Israel’s eastern border, including Iraqi militias, Houthis, and weapons smuggling.

The Israeli army is bolstering its forces along the eastern border with Jordan, following a spike in infiltration attempts, weapons smuggling, and growing fears of a potential invasion by terror groups operating along the strategic frontier.

According to Hebrew-language media reports, the IDF has developed and deployed a new division specifically tasked with patrolling a large stretch of the border in the Dead Sea region.

“There was hope the threats would diminish, but since the motivation [to attack Israel] remains unchanged, we must be better prepared for challenges from the eastern arena — including Iraqi militias, Houthi forces, and weapons transfers,” a senior military official told Mako.

“The goal is to build a system of collection and preparation for threats we expect will grow over time,” the official added.

“We are establishing a strong, forward-looking framework, significant for both the IDF and the State of Israel. The sector’s border will extend southward, and each command will oversee two theaters.”

Mako reported that since the beginning of 2025, Israeli forces have foiled some 120 infiltration attempts from Jordan into Israel.

In addition, at least 78 explosive drones — most launched by the Yemen-based Houthis — have been intercepted in the area.

In August, a former senior Israeli military official warned of the risk of an invasion from Jordan and emphasized the need to secure the frontier.

“Jordan is a major playground for [Israel’s enemies to the] east, Iran and other countries. I should note that the Muslim Brotherhood had a significant presence in Jordan until it was outlawed, and Jordan has recently taken very aggressive steps against it,” Lt. Col. (res.) Amit Yagur told Channel 14.

“Undermining stability there is no small matter, and it is something that others may try to exploit,” he added.

Three Israelis were murdered in a terrorist shooting at the Allenby Bridge, the main border crossing between Israel and Jordan, in September 2024.

The attack occurred when a truck arriving from Jordan stopped at the terminal, and the driver exited the vehicle, opening fire on workers on the Israeli side.
