The IDF on Tuesday cleared for publication the name of Sgt. Ofri Yaffe, 21, from HaYogev, a fighter in the Paratroopers Reconnaissance Unit, who was killed during combat operations in Khan Younis in southern Gaza.

According to preliminary findings, the incident occurred overnight in the Yellow Line area during routine clearing operations carried out by forces from the Paratroopers Brigade.

Two IDF units operating in close proximity mistakenly identified one another as hostile forces and opened fire.

Yaffe was critically wounded in the exchange and was later pronounced dead while being evacuated for medical treatment.

The IDF has opened a formal investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Following the announcement, Moshav HaYogev released a statement mourning the loss of one of its members.

“With deep sorrow and a broken heart, Moshav HaYogev bows its head following the fall of our son, Ofri Yaffe, of blessed memory,” the statement said.

“Ofri, a fighter in the Paratroopers Reconnaissance Unit, fell overnight in the Gaza Strip. The entire HaYogev community is shocked and grieving the heavy loss.”

“We embrace the Yaffe family in their most difficult moments and will stand by their side in any way required.”

Yaffe’s family also issued a statement, saying, “We are shocked by the tragedy and cannot yet comprehend the loss of our beloved son, Ofri.”

Sgt. Yaffe was killed while taking part in ongoing IDF operations aimed at dismantling terrorist infrastructure and protecting Israeli civilians from continued threats emanating from the Gaza Strip.

Funeral details are expected to be announced at a later time.
