IDF soldier who shot wounded terrorist sent to house arrest

Elor Azaria will be released from the IDF to house arrest. His final verdict is expected next week.

IDF soldier Elor Azaria, who was sentenced in February by a military court to 18 months in prison after being found guilty of manslaughter, is being sent home to house arrest.

Azaria is slated to be released from the IDF this week, and therefore can no longer remain under house arrest on an IDF base, which was his situation until now.

In March 2016, Azaria, a combat medic stationed in Hebron, shot a neutralized terrorist in the head as he lay wounded on the ground after committing a stabbing attack against the soldier’s colleagues.

Azaria appealed his conviction in March, and sentencing on the issue is slated for next week.

The prosecution insisted Azaria’s action was unlawful and an act of vengeance, noting the terrorist died of gunshot wounds rather than of injuries sustained during the attack.

The defense maintained Azaria felt his life was in danger, saying he thought the terrorist could have been carrying a bomb on his body.
