Two Hezbollah terrorists were killed in successive Israeli strikes in southern Lebanon on Sunday, as tensions continue to simmer along Israel’s northern border amid growing doubts over Lebanon’s ability to rein in the Iran-backed terror group.
The Israel Defense Forces confirmed Monday morning that its forces carried out two targeted strikes in the Yater area of southern Lebanon.
According to the IDF, one of the terrorists was actively involved in efforts to restore Hezbollah military infrastructure in the area, a move Israel said violated existing understandings between Jerusalem and Beirut.
Minutes later, a second Hezbollah terrorist was eliminated in a follow-up strike nearby. The IDF said both targets were affiliated with Hezbollah and posed an ongoing threat.
The military added that over the past week, forces from the IDF’s 91st Division have killed four Hezbollah terrorists operating in southern Lebanon, as Israel continues to act against attempts by the group to rebuild its military capabilities close to the border.
The strikes come as a year-end deadline approaches for the Lebanese Armed Forces to disarm Hezbollah and assert full control over southern Lebanon under international understandings.
Israeli officials and regional observers, however, have expressed deep skepticism that such a move will take place, noting Hezbollah’s entrenched presence and the Lebanese government’s limited authority over the group.
Israeli officials have repeatedly warned that Hezbollah’s continued military activity in southern Lebanon will not be tolerated, stressing that Israel will act decisively to remove any threat to its citizens and prevent the terror organization from strengthening its positions along the border.
