Minnesota congresswoman Ilhan Omar has been accused of anti-Semitism again, this time based on a tweet she posted related to the presidential campaign of Jewish candidate Michael Bloomberg.
“I wonder why?” tweeted Omar on Saturday in response to news that hedge fund manager and philanthropist Leon Cooperman, who is also Jewish, is throwing his support behind Bloomberg.
Shortly thereafter, international human rights lawyer Arsen Ostrovsky commented on the thread, “Please do enlighten us.” He added a screenshot of a tweet from earlier in the year in which Omar implied that pro-Israel groups bribe politicians to support the Jewish state.
Ostrovsky’s reaction was echoed by Michael Dickson, executive director of Israel advocacy group Stand with Us, who referenced the Benjamins tweet, adding, “We get your insinuation. True to form.”
Accusations of anti-Semitism have followed Omar since she accused Israel of “hypnotiz[ing] the world” via a social media post in 2012.
During her campaign, Omar told a 1,000-person gathering at a synagogue in Minneapolis that she deems anti-Israel boycotts “unhelpful,” but admitted to the MuslimGirl.com website a week after winning the election that she has always supported the BDS movement.
In addition to the anti-Semitism scandal, Omar was accused of having an extramarital affair with a political advisor whose wife named Omar as her husband’s romantic interest in divorce filings. Omar has also been accused of immigration fraud related to her marriage to ex-husband Ahmed Nur Said Elmi.
Omar recently filed for divorce from her current husband, Ahmed Hirsi.
