Iran demands local Jews stop viewing ‘Zionist’ social media content

Iran’s token Jewish MP summoned for dressing down after authorities find local Jews engaging with pro-Israel content on social media.

A representative of Iran’s small Jewish community was summoned for a dressing-down by the regime’s security establishment recently, after authorities discovered that a number of local Jews had engaged with Israeli or pro-Israeli social media content.

On Sunday, MP Homayoun Sameyah Najafabadi, the sole Jewish member of Iran’s parliament, confirmed claims that he was ordered to meet with security officials to discuss the phenomenon of Iranian Jews posting pro-Israel content on social media.

“Unfortunately, in the past two weeks, I was summoned to these agencies because some fellow Jews posted comments and liked false content, causing misunderstandings among the country’s intelligence agencies,” Najafabadi wrote on his Telegram channel.

The Iranian Jewish lawmaker urged members of the local Jewish community not to post or like social media content that could “raise suspicion.”

“You are requested, if you have published any unusual, sensitive, or comments or likes in cyberspace which could be misconstrued, to delete them as soon as possible.”

Specifically, MP Najafabadi instructed Iranian Jews not to follow social media accounts associated with the Israeli military and the State of Israel generally, warning that users who refuse to follow these guidelines could face legal “activity.”

“If you are a member of channels associated with the Zionist regime, including Israel in Persian, or the IDF, and other hostile pages and channels, you must unfollow them immediately.”

“If you do not delete comments or likes, or continue to subscribe to the aforementioned channels, then legal activity may arise, and it will become more difficult to resolve the issue in the future.”

Najafabadi, 65, has represented Iran’s Jewish community – estimated at between 9,000 and 12,000 members – in the parliament since 2020.
