Israeli officials express skepticism regarding the prospects for a negotiated end to the current war with Iran amid reports the US is keeping Jerusalem informed of developments in talks with Tehran.

Israel believes that the odds that the US and Iran are able to reach a peace deal in the near future that will end the current conflict are extremely slim, multiple Israeli officials said Tuesday.
On Monday, President Donald Trump announced that the US and Iran have engaged in talks over the past few days, adding that the contacts have been constructive and could lead to an agreement in the near future.
However, Israel estimates that the talks have only a “very small” chance of success, two officials told The Jerusalem Post, noting that Iran’s demands for war reparations are deal-breakers for the Trump administration.
“At the moment, the Iranians are insisting on American compensation, as well as guarantees from the administration that there will be no further action against Iran as part of any agreement.”
A senior Iranian official told the pro-Iranian, Hezbollah-aligned Lebanese outlet Al-Mayadeen on Monday that Tehran has six conditions for any peace deal with the US, including compensation for damages incurred during the war, the closure of all American military bases in the Middle East, and the extradition of journalists deemed to be hostile toward the Iranian regime.
While President Trump said that he had ordered the military to hold off on planned strikes on Iranian energy infrastructure and power plants, the US has not altered its deployment of forces in the region.
Thousands of Marines, said to be en route to the region, are reportedly still slated for arrival ahead of a possible takeover of Kharg Island near the Strait of Hormuz, home to key Iranian energy infrastructure facilities.
Officials cited by Yedioth Ahronoth did express some concern that the US and Iran could reach a temporary truce as the White House scrambles to lower oil prices.
They added that the US is unlikely to back a permanent deal compromising the administration’s core demands.
