Iran reopens main airport, restarts flights amid truce uncertainty

Tehran’s Imam Khomeini International Airport reopens despite a ceasefire on the brink and ongoing U.S. military buildup in the region.

Iran’s largest international airport reopened for commercial flights on Saturday, a move seen as a sign of the regime’s confidence that the ongoing ceasefire with the United States will hold — at least for now.

Tehran’s Imam Khomeini International Airport had been closed for nearly two months following the outbreak of the U.S.-Israel war with Iran in late February.

Mohammad Amirani, CEO of the Iran Airports and Air Navigation Company, told the state-run Islamic Republic News Agency that flights are currently limited to domestic carriers serving a small number of destinations, including Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and Oman. He added that authorities are working to restore the airport’s full operational capacity.

“Consultations have started with foreign airlines to explain the status of routes and reintroduce flights,” Amirani said, noting that expansion of the flight schedule will occur gradually.

The reopening comes after Donald Trump extended a previously announced two-week ceasefire between Washington and Tehran.

Despite the move, uncertainty remains over how long the truce will last. Analysts have warned that a return to hostilities remains a real possibility if diplomatic efforts fail.

Heightening concerns, both China and India issued advisories on Saturday urging their citizens to leave Iran immediately. The United States issued similar warnings last week for Iran and Lebanon, where the Iran-backed terror group Hezbollah is based.

Open-source intelligence analysts have also reported increased U.S. Air Force activity, suggesting that additional military assets are being repositioned to the Middle East.

Meanwhile, three U.S. Navy aircraft carriers are now deployed in the region — a level not seen since the 2003 invasion of Iraq.

Senior officials in both Washington and Tehran have signaled readiness to resume hostilities if negotiations fail to produce a long-term agreement to end the conflict and stabilize the region.
