Iran’s police have shut down more than 800 clothing stores across the Islamic Republic for selling “unconventional and inappropriate” woman’s clothing, state media reported on Monday.
The merchandise targeted appears to be Western-style fashion and women’s clothing that do not meet strict Islamic requirements.
The raids took place over the course of 10 days after authorities sent official warnings to shop owners in more than 3,600 shops.
Iranian police and state TV have recently campaigned against selling second-hand clothes, which they deemed as “unhygienic,” as well as clothes with English language print on them.
Since the 1979 Islamic Revolution brought Islamists to power in Iran, women are subjected to harsh rules requiring them to cover themselves from head-to-toe in loose-fitting overcoats that hide the feminine shape. They are also required to cover their head with a scarf.
