Iran threatens to close Strait of Hormuz as military drills intensify

The warning follows recent Iranian naval drills conducted in and around the strait.

By World Israel News Staff

Iran escalated its rhetoric Thursday as a senior military official declared that Revolutionary Guard forces are prepared to seize control of or shut down the Strait of Hormuz “as soon as possible” if ordered by Iran’s leadership, underscoring growing tensions around one of the world’s most strategically vital waterways.

The warning follows recent Iranian naval drills conducted in and around the strait, during which state media reported temporary maritime restrictions imposed under what officials described as “security precautions.”

The exercises, carried out by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps under the title “Smart Control of the Strait of Hormuz,” included live missile launches aimed at demonstrating operational readiness and deterrence capabilities.

Iranian state-affiliated outlets said the temporary closure during the drills was intended to ensure shipping safety while showcasing Tehran’s ability to control the narrow maritime passage.

The Strait of Hormuz connects the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman and serves as the only sea route from Gulf energy producers to the open ocean, making it one of the most critical global trade chokepoints.

At the same time, Iran expanded military cooperation with Russia as Iranian media reported that Iranian and Russian naval forces conducted joint drills Thursday in the Sea of Oman and the northern Indian Ocean.

The exercise followed a joint operation simulating the “liberation” of a hijacked vessel, highlighting deepening military coordination between the two countries amid rising regional tensions.

The latest developments come as President Donald Trump continues to weigh potential military action in the region, with escalating military signaling unfolding alongside ongoing diplomatic tensions between Washington and Tehran.
