Iran threatens Trump with ‘new cards’ if fighting resumes

Iran warns it is ready to escalate as the ceasefire deadline approaches.

Iranian parliamentary speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf issued a direct warning to Donald Trump on Monday, declaring that the Islamic Republic is prepared with new military surprises for the U.S., should hostilities resume.

Ghalibaf and other senior Iranian officials have accused the U.S. of violating the two-week temporary truce signed earlier this month, citing Washington’s blockade of key Iranian maritime routes, including the Strait of Hormuz.

“Trump, by imposing a blockade and violating the ceasefire, seeks, in his view, to turn the negotiating table into a table of surrender or to justify renewed warmongering,” Ghalibaf wrote on his official X account.

“We do not accept negotiations under the shadow of threat, and over the past two weeks, we have prepared to reveal new cards on the battlefield,” he added.

The temporary ceasefire between the United States and Iran is set to expire Wednesday evening, with both sides signaling readiness to return to fighting. At the same time, Washington has indicated it remains open to diplomacy, with Trump suggesting that Tehran is willing to reach a deal in the near future.

On Sunday, the U.S. Navy seized an Iranian cargo vessel reportedly carrying oil while it was transiting through the Arabian Sea. The move triggered a sharp response from Iranian military leadership, which vowed to take revenge.

“We warn that the Armed Forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran will soon respond to and retaliate against this armed piracy by the U.S. military,” read a statement from the Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters.

The likelihood of securing a longer-term ceasefire remains uncertain. Talks are scheduled to take place Tuesday in Pakistan, where U.S. Vice President JD Vance is expected to attend.

However, Iranian officials have cast doubt on their participation, stating they will not engage in negotiations as long as the American blockade continues.
