Iran warns that an Israeli presence in the Persian Gulf could result in war

“Any presence of the Zionist regime in the Persian Gulf waters is illegal, as it may result in war and confrontation in the region,” an Iranian commander warned.

“The Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) has warned that any Israeli presence in the Persian Gulf may result in a war in the region” and that “the responsibility for the consequences of [an Israeli] illegal presence lies with the U.S. and the U.K.,” reports PressTV, a network affiliated with Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting.

“The United States and the United Kingdom must assume responsibility for the Zionist regime’s illegal presence in the Persian Gulf waters,” IRGC Navy Commander Rear Admiral Alireza Tangsiri told the Lebanese TV channel Al Mayadeen on Sunday, according to PressTV.

“Any presence of the Zionist regime in the Persian Gulf waters is illegal, as it may result in war and confrontation in the region,” the commander warned, says the report.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Abbas Mousavi described the possibility of an Israeli presence in the Persian Gulf as a blatant threat to Iran, saying that fighting it would be Iran’s right, reported IRNA, the official news agency of the Islamic Republic.

He said that Tehran would view an Israeli role in a Western coalition in the Gulf as a threat to its Iran’s “security, sovereignty, and territorial integrity,” according to IRNA.

Israel’s Foreign Minister Yisrael Katz said on August 6 that he had recently met with a “high ranking” official from the United Arab Emirates and that “Israel is part of the U.S.-led coalition to protect trade routes in the Persian Gulf,” Ynet reported.

“Katz reportedly told the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee that Israel is providing intelligence and other unspecified assistance for Operation Sentinel, the U.S.-led naval mission, to bolster security for vessels in the Strait of Hormuz,” reported IsraelDefense, citing Ynet.

“The report did not specify whether Katz said Israel would send naval vessels to take part in the mission,” the defense outlet noted.

Kan public broadcasting reported last month that Israel was not expected to send ships, but would provide intelligence, IsraelDefense added.
