Iran is claiming to have discovered espionage equipment it believes was planted by the Americans.
Brigadier General Gholam Reza Jalali, the head of Iran’s Civil Defense Organization, claimed that the country’s security forces have exposed electronic devices in unspecified infrastructure that had been placed by the US for the purpose of sabotage and espionage.
Iran’s Fars News reported on Monday that Jalali told reporters in Tehran that “the Americans have placed implants in Iran’s infrastructures with sabotage and data wiring and espionage capabilities, and we have discovered a number of them.”
The US has in the past reportedly conducted cyber attacks on Iran’s infrastructure, and especially on its nuclear program.
The New York Times reported in February that the US had developed a plan for a cyber attack on Iran in case the diplomatic effort to limit its nuclear program failed and led to a military conflict.
The plan, code-named Nitro Zeus, was designed to disable Iran’s air defenses, communications systems and crucial parts of its power grid. The program was shelved after the signing of the nuclear deal between Iran and six other nations.
The planning involved thousands of military and intelligence personnel, and reportedly cost tens of millions of dollars. The plan entailed the placing electronic implants in Iranian computer networks to “prepare the battlefield,”, the Times reported.
