Iranians mark anniversary of US embassy attack with threats

Iran continues to show contempt for the US, even after signing the nuclear deal, which the Islamic Republic is meant to honor in deed and spirit.

Thousands of Iranians on Thursday burned American flags and chanted anti-US slogans as they marked the anniversary of the violent seizure of the US Embassy in Tehran 37 years ago.

Such protests take place annually outside the compound that once housed the embassy.

Iranians at the rally shouted “Death to America” and “Death to Israel” and burned the US and Israeli flags.

On November 4, 1979, Iranian students stormed the US Embassy, taking 52 Americans hostage for 444 days after Washington refused to hand over Iran’s toppled shah, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, for trial in Iran.

The two countries have since had no diplomatic relations.

Earlier on Tuesday, Iranian students staged an anti-US protest outside Tehran’s Sharif University of Technology. The protesters chanted slogans and held banners reading “Down with the USA,” ahead of the “National Day of Fight against Global Arrogance,” the anniversary of the US Embassy takeover.

Speaking on the anniversary of the embassy seizure, Deputy Commander of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Brigadier General Hossein Salami warned that if the US fails to honor its commitments under the nuclear deal, Iran “will send it to a museum” and return to developing its nuclear program.

“If the US does not remain fully committed to its pledges in implementation of the nuclear deal, the inactive centrifuges will come online once again but this time we will not restrict ourselves to the pre-sanctions level,” Salami said.

The Iranian government is not solely committed to the US and the P5+1 countries, it is also committed to the Iranian nation, Salami stressed, adding that the Iranian government has promised the nation that if the US fails to honor its commitments under the nuclear agreement, it will nullify the deal and resume its nuclear activities.
