ISIS has left horrifying carnage in its wake as it retreats from areas it controlled in Iraq thanks to an offensive to liberate Mosul from the terror group’s grip.
Iraqi authorities are probing a mass grave that was discovered by soldiers advancing toward the city of Mosul, currently under Islamic State (ISIS) control.
The horrifying discovery at the town of Hamam al-Alil was the latest instance of mass graves being uncovered on ground formerly held by ISIS.
The Islamic terror group has killed thousands of people in both Syria and Iraq.
Footage from the site shows bones and decomposed bodies among scraps of clothing and plastic bags.
Officials say the grave likely holds some 100 bodies, many of them decapitated.
It was unclear who the victims were, but a soldier pulled a child’s stuffed animal from the site, which was swarming with flies.
In Geneva, the United Nations’ human rights office said it was investigating whether the discovery was connected to reports about the killing of former police officers by ISIS in the same area.
The offensive to liberate Mosul, Iraq’s second largest city, from ISIS control is in its 24th day.
